Embark on an inspiring 8-day journey through the sacred landscapes and historic towns that shaped the Greek War of Independence. Beginning and ending in Athens, this itinerary traces a path through Greece’s most celebrated monasteries—quiet sanctuaries that sheltered heroes, protected traditions, and played a decisive role in the struggle for freedom. Travel from the legendary Corinth Canal and ancient Epidaurus to the romantic city of Nafplio and the monastic heartland of Arcadia. Explore Dimitsana’s dramatic gorges, the solemn memorials of Kalavrita, and the spiritual strongholds of Patra and Nafpaktos. Conclude your pilgrimage in the mystical sanctuary of Delphi and the charming mountain villages of Arachova, Davlia, and Levadia.
This is a journey that blends history, faith, and breathtaking scenery—an unforgettable exploration of Greece’s revolutionary heritage.
You will be picked up from Athens Airport and transferred to Nea Makri. Visit the Monastery of St. Ephraim. The Saint had taken refuge in the monastery as a child to avoid the mass kidnapping of boys by the Ottomans. In 1424, the Turks invaded and massacred all the Fathers of the Abbey. The Saint, who had been praying in a nearby cave, returned to find them dead. The following year, he was captured, tortured for 8 months, and martyred.
After the visit, you will continue to your nearby hotel to check in, enjoy dinner, and rest overnight.
You will visit historic Marathon, the site of the legendary Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., and explore the ancient battlefield, including the Tomb of the Athenians, a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the Greek warriors.
Continue to the Monastery of the Assumption of Mary on Mount Penteli, founded in 1578. In its underground galleries, a permanent exhibition presents the "Secret Schools" that preserved education and culture during the period of the Ottoman occupation.
Proceed to Athens for a panoramic city tour, including the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, which showcase the richness of ancient Greek civilization.
Optional lunch can be enjoyed at a local tavern. Afterward, walk through the streets of Plaka, visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Byzantine Church of Kapnikarea. Return to the hotel in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
You will begin the day with an early drive toward the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, making a brief stop at the Corinth Canal along the way. At Epidaurus, visit the ancient Theatre, celebrated for its remarkable acoustics, and explore the adjoining museum to discover its rich history.
We will then continue to Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, and take time to walk through its charming old town. Lunch at a local restaurant is optional.
Next, visit the Monastery of Loukous, which was set ablaze by Ibrahim in 1826. The church itself was miraculously spared when blood flowed from the icon of St. Efstathios after a Turkish soldier struck it, causing the attackers to flee.
The day concludes with a visit to the Monastery of Malevi on Mount Parnon, a site of significant historical importance during the Greek Revolution. The monastery served as a Secret School, a hospital, and a headquarters for the fighters, providing crucial support to the revolutionaries.
Enjoy dinner in the evening, followed by overnight stay.
Drive to the historic monasteries near the traditional village of Dimitsana. Visit the Monastery of Filosofou, also known as the “Secret School,” and the Monastery of Timios Prodromos. Both stand on the slopes of the stunning Lousios Gorge and played crucial roles during the Ottoman occupation, supporting education, culture, and resistance.
You will then return to Dimitsana for lunch at a traditional tavern. Afterwards, visit the Open-air Water Power Museum and its old mill, where gunpowder was produced to aid the fighters of the revolution.
The afternoon is free to explore the village, the birthplace of Patriarch Gregorios V, and take in the scenic surroundings at your own pace.
The day concludes with dinner and overnight stay.
Drive toward Kalavrita, making a stop at the magnificent Cave of Lakes, renowned for its multi-level cascading lakes and striking stalactite formations.
Continue to Kalavrita to visit the Holocaust Memorial, honoring the victims of Nazi atrocities.
Explore the Monastery of Mega Spileo, which houses an original icon of the Virgin Mary, traditionally attributed to the Apostle Luke.
Lunch in Kalavrita is optional.
Visit the Monastery of Agia Lavra, the site where the revolution against the Turks was officially declared.
The afternoon offers free time for shopping and sampling local products.
Dinner and overnight stay.
You will travel through the scenic Vouraikos Gorge to the Monastery of Taxiarhes (Archangels), which houses relics of the Holy Wood and the Crown of Thorns, along with relics of Osios Leontios and other saints. The monastery served as a storage site for supplies during the Greek Revolution and later became a high school.
You will continue to Patras to visit the Church of St. Andrew, an important spiritual landmark.
A short stop follows in Nafpaktos, at its picturesque port.
Proceed to the Monastery of Varnakova, which historically functioned as a care center, refuge, school, and active support base for Greek fighters.
In the afternoon, transfer to Delphi for hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.
You will visit Delphi, known as the “Navel of the Earth,” and explore the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo, the Castalia Spring, and the Archaeological Museum.
You will then travel to the traditional village of Arachova for a short stop, before continuing to the 11th-century Monastery of Jerusalem (Yesarlie) near Davlia, which historically served as a supply center during the Greek Revolution.
Proceed through Levadia, with time for an optional lunch.
Finally, arrive in Athens for hotel check-in, dinner, and overnight stay.
Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure, concluding your 8-day journey through the sacred monasteries and historic sites that shaped Greece's struggle for liberation.
